The Do’s and Don’ts of Sliding into DMs

Many social media users agree that sliding into someone’s DMs can be a total flirting faux pas. Although, if you do it right, a well-crafted message can lead to a connection. Dating.com surveyed 10,000 male and female users to find out what piques their interest when it comes to the good-old direct message. Here’s what we found:

  • Flirty
    • Lead with a joke: 82% of users said they are more likely to respond to a DM if it makes them laugh
    • Ask for their phone number: 67% of users said they would prefer to chat via text than via DM if interested
    • Comment on their story: 93% of users said they are more likely to respond to a DM if it is in response to their http://www.dating.buzz/?p=1225story
  • Dirty
    • Compliment their appearance: 68% of users said they wouldn’t reply to DMs containing flirtatious compliments
    • Use emoji’s: 52% of users ranked emoji’s in DMs as a turn off
    • Send images: 97% reported that images, of any kind, read as creepy and unwarranted
